 For The Longest Time {Open}

"Daaaaaaddy!" Yelled a tiny girl walking down the steps of an old house, her blonde curls bouncing up and down as she, tugged on the arm of an older boy. Despite what she had said, it was likely for passers by to assume they were brother and sister. Maxxie Halloway rolled his blue eyes good-naturedly as he followed his daughter out of their house and down the sidewalk. The toddler was getting impatient, but the amount of physical strength she had was limited, meaning she would simply have to wait.

"Hold on," replied Maxxie calmly as he caught up to her and hoisted her up so that he was carrying her, and then promptly continued walking. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, and Maxxie had promised Alice earlier in the week that he would take her to the park, hoping that she would change her mind and not want to go, as was often the case. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and when Saturday rolled around he found himself being dragged out the door. Looking around at the various scenery, he decided it might not be quite as bad as it could have been; after all, the sun was out and there didn't seem to be many clouds, and maybe there would even be some cute guys his age around. A small smile spread across his face at the thought and he continued walking down the street, carrying Alice in his arms.

Riff sighed, hoisting Ada up onto his back, looking around. After a moment he chuckled, "Child, you're getting mighty heavy to be riding back there." He felt her grip tighten as she shook her head, hitting him in the face with her hair. He grinned, "Kidding, Ada." After she'd settled, he said, "Want to go to the park? Meet some kids your age to play with?"

She nodded, "Lead on, Riffy!" She laughed and clung tight to his back as he began walking. As the day was on the warm side, he and his adoring sister had dressed down a bit, the girl wearing a faded red t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts, feet covered in sandals. He himself never forsaked his boots, but had worn shorts and a muscle shirt, both black, and well cared for so the darkness was still solid, unfaded.

The walk wasn't really a long one from the house, and with the slight breeze, carrying the three year old on his back wasn't really a problem...well, it never was, but still, he liked to tease her. With the way he carried on, Riff couldn't wait to get out of school and start a family, but Ada would always come first in his book.

Maxxie was only about a block away from the house when Alice's small arm flew out in his face, pointing silently to something across the street. Being considerably young and, as a result, not having much of a vocabulary yet, she mumbled something reminiscent of "Look!" into his ear and he followed her arm. There stood another boy around his own age, with another young girl being carried on his back. He gave a small smile and turned back to his daughter.

"Yes, I see them, Al," he replied lightly, his thick British accent appearing slightly more than it usually did. He kept walking as he continued talking to Alice. "But we'll see plenty of kids you can play with at the park." He usually wasn't good with just walking up to people and starting a conversation, although he had to admit the other boy did seem interesting. Out of the corner of his eye he observed his black clothes, and then looked down at his own faded jeans and t-shirt. They were definitely different and, although he wasn't necessarily attracted to him, he definitely found him fascinating.

Ada loved to look around when she was on Riff's back, and spotted the pair across the street, though she had more composure than to say anything, after all, Riff was muttering something about snowcones, which definately caught her attention. After a bit she asked, "Do you have my camera?"

He nodded, "Always, Ada." He spotted the park up ahead and smiled, glancing back at her as best as he could, "Now, you're going to let me have time to read a bit, and not be asking me to push you on the swings every five minutes, right?"

She grinned, "I can push myself, most of the time!" She giggled and pulled herself up more on her back, glancing around. Her hair fell in her face and she blew at it, a bit disgruntled when it refused to move. "You got my legs tight?"

He nodded, "You know I do. I wouldn't be walking if I didn't now would I?" She shook her head no and pulled her hand away from around his neck, pushing her hair back before replacing it. Riff jumped a little to shift her on his back and she squeeled happilly as they got closer to the park.

It was times like these, Riff felt as if he and Ada were the whole world. He loved the girl to death, and would die for her if he had to.

The moment Maxxie's feet touched the grass of the local park, Alice was struggling to get out of his arms. Laughing lightly, he put the toddler down and followed her as she took off running over to the swing set. "Hurry," she whined impatiently as she waited for him to lift her onto the swing. He was there a second later, settling her onto the seat and giving her a light push. He knew most people would probably criticize him, saying he was much too young to have a daughter, but he knew if he had a chance he would trade having Alice for anything in the world.

Out of the corner of his eye he noticed the other pair was getting closer to the same park, although he went right on pushing Alice without much recognition, responding to the various comments she attempted to make as the swing went higher and higher, and laughing along as she giggled.

Once they were close to the park, not even really there yet, Riff stopped, starting to set Ada down, "Race you there!" She got down and grinned, nodding as she looked over at him before setting off at a run. "Hey! No fair, head start!" He chased after her, going nowhere near full speed, allowing her to stay ahead.

She giggled, calling back, "You have longer legs!" She stopped when she reached the grass at the park, looking at him as he jogged up. "Alright, you can go read or whatever, I'mma go swing...you don't have to push me."

He chuckled, leaning down to kiss the top of her head before taking her hand, "I'll push you a bit, and then I can read once you're bored of me."

She giggled, "I never get bored of you!" She grabbed his hand, skipping as he walked them over to the swings. He nodded some to the other pair, moving around them. Ada had let go of his hand and run over to one, grabbing the chains and pushing a foot in before dropping herself into the seat, beaming at Riff, "Let me get started, and then I'll let you push! Don't help me until I say!"

He nodded, "Alright, Ada."

Maxxie continued to go about pushing the swing when the two finally reached the park, the little girl running up to the same swing set and the boy walking off to somewhere else close by. He gave him a polite nod in response to his own, almost missing Alice as she hopped off of the swing set and ran over to the other girl. "Alice!" he shouted after her, surprised she would just jump up and run away. He chased after her and found her standing next to the other girl's swing.

"Hi!" greeted Alice in a small voice before Maxxie had reached her, her own British accent appearing just as strongly as his own. It became clear she was the more outgoing of the two of them, which Maxxie didn't necessarily mind; he liked her to have friends.

Riff was indeed close by, leaning against the metal framework of the swings, pulling himself to sit on one of the crossbars as he watched Ada. She hadn't even gotten started good when the other girl and her companion walked-well, ran-over.

Ada smiled at the other girl, "Hello." She wasn't...quite as enthusiastic, but she was definately friendly. She watched the other girl, dragging her foot in the dirt beneath the swing, which she could just reach. It wasn't that she was much taller than the other girl, though she was older ((only a year)), she just happened to be in a lower swing.

She tilted her head to one side, waiting on the other to speak again, sending Riff a small glance, he was alert, but didn't really seem worried.

"Alice," Maxxie warned as he finally caught up to her. "You can't just run off like that!" Alice looked back at her father with an innocent look, knowing fully that she had him wrapped tightly around her finger.

"Sorry, daddy," she said, batting her eyelashes, before she turned back to the other girl, who didn't seem all too interested in meeting her. It didn't seem to phase the two-year-old, and she continued with her introduction as if Maxxie had never interrupted. "I'm Alice," she said, although this time with less energy. She waited for the other girl to reply, and Maxxie sighed, stepping back from the pair and scanning the park for somewhere else to sit.

She smiled, "I'm Adalade." The name was said with practice and actual skill. She was proud of it, and from his seat, Riff chuckled. The girl nodded some at Alice, "But you can call me Ada...I know Adalade's a mouthful." She giggled some, looking from Alice to Maxxie, "That's your dad!?" She said it in disbelief, eyes wide. He looked to be near Riff's age, and her own dad was much much older. It was beyond her mentality to see someone as young as Riff as a parent.

Riff kept his watch, flipping upside down on the bar he was sitting on, letting his arms dangle. He got his book out, reading upside down, occasionally checking on Ada and her new friend.

Alice smiled widely in acknowledgment, although not quite sure about a couple of things Ada had said. She followed Ada's bewildered gaze and nodded proudly, ringlets moving with her. "Mhmm! Maxxie." His young age had never really occurred to Alice; she assumed it was just like that for everyone, although from Ada's expression it was clear she wasn't used to it. She altered her focus from Maxxie back to Ada.

Maxxie, meanwhile, had found a nearby park bench to hang out on for the time being. He pulled out his mp3 player from the pocket of his jeans and turned it on, putting the earbuds into his ears as the music began to play. He noticed Alice looking back at him and smiled fondly to himself, although he couldn't help but feel boredom already beginning to tug at him.

Ada nodded some, looking from Alice to Maxxie. She was a little shocked, but she could ask Riff about it on the way home. She liked to know about these things, as she was a very curious child. She began to kick her feet some, making the swing move just slightly, eyes on the ground before they flashed back to Alice, "My dad's all old..." She made a face.

Riff closed his book moments later, swinging back up and then slipping off the bar. He took a look at the two girls, making sure they were still alright before making his way over to Maxxie. The bench was right beside a tree, and Riff opted to lean on it instead of sitting by the other male. He turned his gaze back to the girls, waving some at Ada who waved back. He mimed licking an ice cream cone and she nodded furiously. He chuckled, looking over at Maxxie. "Hey."
