Guess Who... ((Open))

Rick was beginning to understand why he'd left, and slowly to forget why he'd come back. He'd been assured, by countless adults that he would be protected, and that the people who mistreated him would be punished, but so far, he'd seen no sign of that.

He sighed softly as he sat in the auditorium, picking at his lunch, though his appetite was lost. He'd come here because it was cleaner than the bathrooms, and had actually hoped to eat, but the weight of the stares and the accusations was heavy.

He'd never considered what he'd done to Terri abuse. They wewre isolated incidents. Each and every one was an accident. He'd never meant to hurt her. He'd told her that countless times, apologized for each and every bruise...except this last one, but that wasn't his fault. They wouldn't let him.

He growled in frustration, stabbing his sandwich with the plastic fork his mom had packed him for some reason. He never understood how she even had time to fix his lunch, as it seemed to him that she, like his father, was never home.

He wasn't always like this. When he was younger, he was happy. His parents didn't work all the time, people didn't exactly care how nerdy he was, because there was a balance. He was happy.

It had all fallen away when his parents had started working all the time. Instead of being there for him, they were too busy, and he got morose, angry even. He'd never experienced real anger before, and didn't know what to do with it. In the beginning, anger came in tears and yelling, but then he'd seen Terri. She'd looked like an angel, and though he knew he'd never speak to her, she made him happy just by living. He'd began showering her in roses, and she'd caught him.

He'd been happier than ever when they'd become a couple. Two kindred spirits looking for acceptance, or at least, so Rick had thought. He hadn't meant to be so jealous, but he hadn't wanted to share her, she was his happiness, and he couldn't express that to her. He'd never been angry at her, he'd been angry with everyone else...but she was always there, defending them. They were her friends but he could see through that. True friends would want her to be happy wouldn't they, and she was happy with Rick.

And then the incident, and he'd been forced to admit to himself that he did have a problem. He hadn't wanted to in the slightest, but with all the proof there....it had been abuse. No, he hadn't meant it, and yes, it had been caused by his poor anger management, but it had been abuse none the less. The thoughts brought tears to his eyes, but he held them back, reminding himself that he was improving.

It was everyone else who couldn't see that. They couldn't see how much he'd changed, how much better he'd gotten at holding back his anger.

Bella walked slowly up to the doors of the auditorium, backpack slung over her shoulder and lunch left back in the lunch room. She hadn't been eating much lately; she was too stressed with everything that had been going on lately. She had been at Degrassi for a while now and she still didn't know that many people. Sure, there was Riff and Ada and a few people she shared classes with, but other than that, no one. Even worse, her mother was starting to get on her case about it; how she found time between her demanding career and her seemingly endless string of rich boyfriends was beyond her. It was as if Anderton and Haylee had never even existed.

With everything on her mind at once, Bella felt she owed it to herself to go somewhere empty to think, even if it was only for a minute. She would have gone to the bathroom or somewhere else of that nature, although going to the auditorium seemed like there would be less of a risk of someone walking in. She reached out her thin, pale arms and opened one of the heavy wooden doors, only to find someone else already there. "Oh!" she exclaimed, surprised. "I'm sorry. I didn't expect anyone else to be here."

He looked up, shaking his head some, "It's fine." He didn't say anything else. He didn't recognize the girl, but that didn't mean that she didn't know who he was...that someone hadn't already poisoned her against him. He turned back to his lunch, pushing it away. After a moment he sighed, "What brings you to my sanctuary?"

He chuckled bitterly at his private joke, as if any part of this school could be a sanctuary for him. He gestured to the empty floor beside him as if offering her a seat. If she didn't turn and run or throw a harsh remark his way, he might just find a friend. He really needed that.

Bella smiled and sat down across from him, smiling; he seemed nice enough. She shrugged at the question as she settled down, legs crossed indian-style in front of her. "I dunno. I guess I just needed to think, and the auditorium seemed like the best place." He didn't need to hear all the overwhelming details, so that was all she said for the moment. "And you?" she asked, eyebrows furrowed. She honestly hadn't seen him around before.

There was a good reason she hadn't. Rick tried his best to hide, to blend in so that he didn't get hit, kicked, tripped, spat upon, anything really was fair when it came to Rick it seemed. He smiled sadly, "They don't like me out there." He sighed, eyes growing distant as he looked at the wall, "I did something on accident...and if they didn't hate me before that, they hate me now."

He sighed, "In here, it's better than out there. They don't usually look in here, and I can eat in piece...when I feel like eating. If I stayed out there, there's no telling where my food and dignity might end up."

Bella nodded solemnly, sensing he didn't really want to talk about it beyond that. "I know how that goes," she replied sincerely. "I've done some things I'm not so proud of myself." Of course, everyone had always told her the accident wasn't her fault, but she could never help thinking they were just being nice. She could've stopped Anderton...She could've stopped it all from happening...She shook those thoughts out of her head for the moment and looked back at Rick.

"I'm Isabella, by the way," she told him, holding out her hand. "Most people just call me Bella, though." In truth, she had been called a million different things over the years, but Bella was the one that seemed to stick with her the most.

He smiled some, shaking her hand slowly, "Isabella. It's a beautiful name." He chuckled softly, "I'm Rick...though most call me psycho...or freak, take your pick, it's open season." It was a joke, though it came out flat. He tried to make light of his situation, but it didn't work too well.

He sighed some as he released her hand. "Of course, you're welcome to call me by my actual name like a civilized person as compared to the neanderthals in those hallways."

Bella smiled softly at the compliment. He seemed very sweet, actually, and she wasn't sure exactly what he could have done to have everyone react the way he'd described them reacting. That was one of the reasons she didn't really get along with most people; she tended to think differently from them.

Bella shook her head. "Neanderthals are over-rated," she remarked with a shrug and a small smile towards Rick. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Rick."

Rick hadn't heard those words in quite some time and felt his heart swell some. He gave her a smile, "Those words are nice to hear." Rick was sweet, until he got angry, and that's when his monster came out and all the problems would begin, but he was improving. He shuddered some, trying to forget for a moment what had happened.

Somehow, he felt that Bella would understand, but those things weren't something you told someone you'd just met. No, trust had to be established before he could ever tell anyone, though Bella would probably be the first, he decided.
